MATERIALS:
-necklace chain (mine is about 28" long)
-ten 1" wooden beads with predrilled holes
-paint (I used DecoArts Americana paints in these colors: Sea Breeze, Royal Fuchsia, Orange Twist, Bright Yellow & Neutral Gray)
STEP 1: Sometimes the wooden beads have shavings on the inside. To clear them out, take the end of your paintbrush and twist the paintbrush back and forth a few times on either side of the bead.
STEP 2: Eyeball the center of your bead, and using the painters tape, wrap the bead horizontally, making sure the ends meet to allow half of the bead to be exposed for painting.
STEP 4: Once the paint is dry, peel off the painters tape.
STEP 5: Now it's time to string the beads. Line them up in the order you want them on your necklace and begin stringing, making sure the two colored ends meet each other.
Close the claps and you are ready to wear it!
LOVE it! I want to do this with gold and coral, I think...
ReplyDeleteit would be really pretty if you painted all of the balls with a base, like really light gold, then you chose a gold chain :)
DeleteGreat idea!!! :)
Deletesoooooooo need to do this one!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is beyond awesome!!
ReplyDeleteThis is super cute! So fun and simple but it looks so high end. High five!
ReplyDeleteLike this one! http://littlebirdiesecrets.blogspot.com/2012/02/gold-dipped-necklace.html
ReplyDeleteI'm so loving this necklace! You have a wonderful blog :)
ReplyDeleteRunning a row of narrow painters', graphic artist, or car detailing tape around the bead makes it easy to paint a straight line.
ReplyDeleteI love this, thanks!
ReplyDeleteL>O>V>E!
ReplyDeleteOh this is so pretty! Love the colors you used!
ReplyDeleteFAB FAB FAB!
ReplyDeleteThis is just stunning.
ReplyDeleteLove it.
LOVE! You have such a steady hand. I'd have to tape it off in order to get a straight line. The colors are great too!
ReplyDeleteI featured your DIY on my blog today.

What a stunning piece of handmade jewelry! Lovely!
ReplyDeleteVisiting from your feature on The 36th Avenue :)
This is beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait to try this! This will be my first jewelry making endeavor... can you tell me where to find wooden beads like these? I have a JoAnn's and a Michael's, but will they have those there? Thank you! So glad to have found your blog (through Pinterest of course)
ReplyDeleteshannon, i got my beads at michael's so try there first! make sure you get the beads with a predrilled hole that goes all the way through the bead. they sell some that just have a hole drilled part way through the bead, but that won't help with this project. :) good luck!!
ReplyDeleteFound them at Michael's. Thank you!
DeleteI love this so much. Im going to have to give this a try!! (Also, I adore the colors you chose!)
ReplyDeleteSoo simple but soo cool :o)
ReplyDeleteI have to make one right now and wear it tomorrow to brighten up the work day
Have a nice evening
I recently made an ombre necklace with wooden beads and have some leftover! Now I know what to do with them! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeletethanks for visiting! your ombre necklace is adorable and i'm thinking i'll have to make one with my leftover beads!! :)

I just love this! I think I may NEED it for my holidays, Can it be bought?
ReplyDeleteCan you give a list of the paint colors you used? I'd love to find those colors!
ReplyDeleteof course! I need to update this post, but in the meantime, I used DecoArts paints in these colors: Sea Breeze, Royal Fuchsia, Orange Twist, Bright Yellow and Neutral Gray. Hope that helps!
DeleteI'm going to Michael's tomorrow to get beads and paint to make this necklace! Perfect for when I go to the beach next week
ReplyDeleteQuestion-did you use a purchased necklace or did you make one?
ReplyDeleteSusan, I purchased a simple necklace chain from my local craft store. I've also used waxed thread (near the jewelry making stuff) as well for a more inexpensive solution. good luck!
DeleteWhat section at Michael's do they sell these beads? I tried to find some today but couldn't find them anywhere :(
ReplyDeleteJessica, I'm sorry you had trouble finding the beads. I found them in the paintable wood section. There will be blocks and other wood shaped items in the aisle. I hope this helps! Oh and make sure you get the ones that are drilled through, not the ones that just have a hole drilled part way through.
ReplyDeleteOkay! Thanks so much! :) I actually went through that aisle but didn't look through it too much lol thanks again and have a great day! :)
ReplyDeleteLaura,
ReplyDeleteI was googling for this tutorial today, and found it... here (http://www.sheknows.com/living/diy-craft-photo-tutorials-gallery/diy-wooden-bead-necklace/finished-diy-wood-bead-necklace). Maybe you know about this and gave them permission to post, but since they replaced your logo with their own I am guessing that you did not. Just thought you would like to know that your content is showing up elsewhere without attribution - I know I would!
Kacie
hi kacie, thanks for the heads up, but i actually gave them permission to use the project, so we're all good there. i appreciate you looking out for me though. so thoughtful!
DeleteI've been eyeing up this cute necklace for awhile and finally decided to get the materials! I'm wondering though if the paint will rub off onto my shirt when I wear it?? Did you have any problems with that? Thanks :)
ReplyDeletehi katie, i didn't have a problem with the paint rubbing off onto my clothes and i've worn mine countless times. if you're concerned about it, once the paint dries, spray some poly urethane on the beads to seal them. hope that helps!
DeleteGreat, I may try it with just the paint then since it worked for you. Thank you!!
DeleteLove it! Thank you. I made it today for my sisters birthday tomorrow. She will love it too.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to know you used this tutorial to make your sisters birthday gift. What a sweet idea. Hope she enjoys it too!
DeleteThis is pretty awesome! I'm pretty sure I even have everything I need to make this right now. Woohoo!
ReplyDeleteI can't find a chain like that, where did you get it?
ReplyDeleteI found my chain at Michaels. Hope that helps!
ReplyDeleteDo you recall how long it took for the beads to completely dry? I would love to try this for a large group (60 women) activity but am not sure if I will have enough time for the women to paint and allow to dry.
ReplyDeleteannemarie, they don't take long to dry at all because the wood soaks in the paint so easily. i'd say, 10 minutes maybe? enjoy!

ReplyDeleteLaura I'm sorry for the missunderstanding.
ReplyDeleteI've just edited my post and replied your comment.
I said I was fell in love for one of the necklace Scarlata proposed and since your link was there I didn't thought to link it again because it was clear I did it because of yours.
But here you are the post with the link.
Thanks for the inspiration :) and sorry for the inconvenience.
