DIY: PAINTED WOODEN BEAD NECKLACE



Today I'm sharing a simple project with some bright colors. Perfect for spring!

MATERIALS:
-necklace chain (mine is about 28" long)
-ten 1" wooden beads with predrilled holes
-paint (I used DecoArts Americana paints in these colors: Sea Breeze, Royal Fuchsia, Orange Twist, Bright Yellow & Neutral Gray)
-paintbrush
-painters tape


STEP 1: Sometimes the wooden beads have shavings on the inside. To clear them out, take the end of your paintbrush and twist the paintbrush back and forth a few times on either side of the bead.

STEP 2: Eyeball the center of your bead, and using the painters tape, wrap the bead horizontally, making sure the ends meet to allow half of the bead to be exposed for painting.


STEP 3: Paint the exposed part of your bead. I did two coats to ensure coverage. You will paint two beads the exact same, for a total of 10 beads.



STEP 4: Once the paint is dry, peel off the painters tape.


STEP 5: Now it's time to string the beads. Line them up in the order you want them on your necklace and begin stringing, making sure the two colored ends meet each other. 







Close the claps and you are ready to wear it!

      it would be really pretty if you painted all of the balls with a base, like really light gold, then you chose a gold chain :)

    Running a row of narrow painters', graphic artist, or car detailing tape around the bead makes it easy to paint a straight line.

    shannon, i got my beads at michael's so try there first! make sure you get the beads with a predrilled hole that goes all the way through the bead. they sell some that just have a hole drilled part way through the bead, but that won't help with this project. :) good luck!!

      Susan, I purchased a simple necklace chain from my local craft store. I've also used waxed thread (near the jewelry making stuff) as well for a more inexpensive solution. good luck!

    Jessica, I'm sorry you had trouble finding the beads. I found them in the paintable wood section. There will be blocks and other wood shaped items in the aisle. I hope this helps! Oh and make sure you get the ones that are drilled through, not the ones that just have a hole drilled part way through.

    Laura,

Maybe you know about this and gave them permission to post, but since they replaced your logo with their own I am guessing that you did not. Just thought you would like to know that your content is showing up elsewhere without attribution - I know I would!

    I've been eyeing up this cute necklace for awhile and finally decided to get the materials! I'm wondering though if the paint will rub off onto my shirt when I wear it?? Did you have any problems with that? Thanks :)

      hi katie, i didn't have a problem with the paint rubbing off onto my clothes and i've worn mine countless times. if you're concerned about it, once the paint dries, spray some poly urethane on the beads to seal them. hope that helps!

    Do you recall how long it took for the beads to completely dry? I would love to try this for a large group (60 women) activity but am not sure if I will have enough time for the women to paint and allow to dry.

      annemarie, they don't take long to dry at all because the wood soaks in the paint so easily. i'd say, 10 minutes maybe? enjoy!
